BASEHOR, KS – Hey, there’s still time to start a Summer Reading List! That’s right. It’s not too late. Summer’s “unofficial” end is Labor Day weekend. But, we all know the first day of autumn is not until September 22. So you have plenty of time to get started. Just for fun, I went into the (NPR) National Public Radio website and discovered a great list of Top 100 beach reads. You can go there too. Just visit: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106983620. I read 35 of the 100 so far. However, I expect to be very busy over the course of the next few days reading the ones I missed. So, how many have you read?

My Top 5 from the list are:

1.    TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, by Harper Lee
2.    THE KITE RUNNER, by Khaled Hosseini
3.    FRIED GREEN TOMATOES AT THE WHISTLE STOP CAFE, by Fannie Flagg
4.    THE JOY LUCK CLUB, by Amy Tan
5.    WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, by Sara Gruen

Fannie Flagg

Fannie Flagg wrote “Fried Green Tomatoes…”

Need something a little grittier and suspenseful to read before autumn? Try these:

-GUARDIAN OF LIES by Steve Martini –  Published July 14, 2009; Paul Madriani’s chance encounter with 26-year-old Katia Solaz, a Costa Rican beauty, leads to a desperate race to avoid not only personal disaster but also a national one in Martini’s sprawling 10th thriller to feature the Southern California defense attorney.

-THE APOSTLE by Brad Thor – Published June 30, 2009; A new administration and a new approach to dealing with America’s enemies have left covert counterterrorism operative Scot Harvath without a job. But when American doctor Julia Gallo is kidnapped in Afghanistan, the terms of her ransom leave the president with only one course of action (reviews from amazon.com).
