GOSPEL TALENT TOI LEE CONTINUES TO MAKE HER MARK IN KANSAS CITY, MassAppealNews.com

KANSAS CITY, Mo – Are you in the mood for gospel? If so, get out your seat and make some noise because Gospel recording artist Toi Lee is in the house. The talented vocalist, CEO of Jenae Platinum Publishing in Kansas City, performed with acclaimed gospel legend Fred Hammond a few weeks ago in Overland Park and shook the house down. “It was truly an anointed and blessed experience working with Mr. Hammond,” said Lee. “I like to give thanks to the AME Kansas City South District committee for the opportunity to perform with one of the best in the industry.” Recently, Toi took time to discuss her exciting Gospel career with Mass Appeal editor Wayne Hodges. Their Q&A went as follows:

HODGES: Toi, thanks for speaking with me. Can you take a moment to describe the inspiration behind your music? How and when did you get started?

TOI: I started singing at the age of 7. I am the 4th child out of 5. And my mother, Etta M. Lee-Boyd, encouraged me with core values of life. She also saw to it that I stayed a lady. And she wouldn’t allow me to lower my standards to succeed in life. I rehearsed everyday for 5 hours in front of the bevel mirror door at my parent’s house. My father, Marcellius M. Lee Sr., is primarily responsible for my musical talents and career. As a drummer and singer, he wrote and produced his own music. He was also a member of the “Mutual Musicians Foundation” on 18th Vine District in Kansas City.

Toi Lee has inspired many through Gospel

HODGES: What are some of your most memorable performances?

TOI: In 1995, I performed with 2 friends, Nyila and Tuesday. And we agreed to form a group called “Destined.” We auditioned for the best trio who exemplifies the music group “Supremes” at the Starlight Theatre. We won 1st place and represented the state of Missouri for one year.We performed at various venues and platforms including the Governor’s Conference, at Municipal Auditorium, at Memorial Hall, and the Sedalia State Fair to name a few.

I also traveled to Hollywood, Florida to attend the Dr. Bobby Jones Gospel Retreat which aired sometime in 2007. I performed a duet with the group “Robert Houston and True Dedication.” The late Donna Ward and her husband Elder Andrew Ward inspired me to travel with them to the Church of God in Christ A.I.M.’s Convention. In 1999, I met Evangelist, and national recording artist Dorinda Clark-Cole. During this time, I became a national choir member.

HODGES: Did any other artists stand out during your rise to fame?

TOI: I was under the influence of Karen Clark-Sheard, Kim Burrell, the late Reverend Timothy Wright and Evangelist Betty Nelson. I am very grateful to our God for allowing me to perform on the same platform as national Gospel artists Kirk Whelan, Carolyn Traylor, Terry McConnell, First Creation, Bishop Neil Roberson, Bishop Larry Trotter, Lemmie Battles, LaCresha Campbell and many others. I can honestly say God has truly blessed me.

HODGES: Can you provide a run down of some of your favorite gospel tunes? What was the inspiration behind them?

TOI: One of my all-time favorites is ‘Jesus knows it all.’ The song reminds me of the conditions that took place when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans. Another favorite is called ‘Power to Life.’ My inspiration behind writing this song was a young woman who had contemplated committing suicide. This took place right after I ministered a song at the “Power To End Stroke Tour” with Dr. Bobby Jones, Dottie Peoples and hostess Merdean Gales.

A song that’s been in my heart lately is “The Victory.” It talks about how God ministered for 40 days and 40 nights before sacrificing his life, and giving his blood on Calvary so that we, as sinners, may have salvation. Through this message, God wants us to talk and walk through the spiritual revelation. This is a wonderful song and the title pretty much says it all.

HODGES: Before we wrap this up, what message do you have for all the young ladies out there aspiring to become vocalists?

TOI: Don’t compromise the Gospel of Jesus by committing acts of fornication to get ahead in the ministry. Serve God, and not the flesh. And everything else promises to fall into place.

  24. Toi Lee Says:

    Hello To All My Friends,

HAPPY BELATED NEW YEAR TO ALL. My theme for this year is “LIVING IT FOR JESUS CHRIST”.

A lot of artists / psalmists sing about the Lord, but do we live under the conditions, the instructions that God set out for us, his commandments and HIS WORD. It’s nothing less than just that.

This beginning year in 2010, God is kicking it off and there are a lot of great endeavors that will be taking place.

On December 31, 2009, God allowed me to ministered in songs at Victory Temple Church, which will land me this year in one of the MUSIC CAPITOL’S “, ATLANTA, GA”. God’s prophetic word is taking its course.

In January 9, 2010, God allowed me to help coordinate and be apart of New Hope Benefit CD/DVD recording. This will lead to Texas where I will be on the platform with Fantasia and other ministries.

During the week of January 15-17, 2010, all roads lead to the 25th Annual Stellar Awards held at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN. After I landed and went to the hotel and entered the room, immediately the HOLY GHOST fell on me. I knew then God was instructing me to watch, listen and stay prayerful. I came up against oppositions and trials, BUT GOD, KNOW ONE BUT GOD CAN DELIVER YOU OUT OF THEM ALL. Because of what happened, God will make your enemies your footstool. The Lord started working and opening doors for me. I really had an anointed awesome time.

How many believe that God will equip you with everything you need before he sends you out? That’s why we must always stay in God’s face, his word, fast and pray. The Stellar Awards recipients and nominees brought the Grand Ole Opry DOWN!!!!!. We had CHURCH…….

In February 2010, I will be apart of a benefit concert for the Haitian Release. Stay tuned for the announcement. Also coming into Sedalia, MO, I extend an invitation, but you have to drive your own vehicles. Tickets are $8.00 and $10.00. For more information you can me at 816-695-1650 or email at jenaeplatinum@yahoo.com.

A concert is on the way, but the date is not yet confirmed. It’s possible it may be in February, 2010. Stay tuned for this announcement.

    More engagement announcements to come.

My ending salutation is WORK WHILE IT’S DAY, WHEN NIGHT COMETH, NO MAN WORK, BUT YOUR WORK IS NEVER DONE, IT CONTINUES ON DAY AND NIGHT, IN SEASON AND OUT OF SEASON. KEEP YOUR ARMOUR ON AND BE YE READY AT ALL TIMES!!!!

    Blessings to all.

Yours In Christ / In His Will,
    Living it for Jesus Christ,
    Servant / Psalmist Toi Lee
