Kansas candidates to square off

Here’s the monster list of candidates who filed for Congress, statewide office and the Legislature in Kansas.

First up is the Aug. 3 primary. Then it’s on to the Nov. 2 election.

Bid on Kansas City

U.S. Senate: Republicans are Tom Little of Mound City; Bob Londerholm of Overland Park; U.S. Rep. Jerry Moran of Hays; and U.S. Rep. Todd Tiahrt of Goddard.

Democratic candidates are Robert Conroy of Shawnee; David Haley of Kansas City, Kan.; Lisa Johnston of Overland Park; Charles Schollenberger of Prairie Village; and Patrick Wiesner of Lawrence.

Michael Dann, Libertarian Party, and Joe Bellis, Reform Party, will also be on the August ballot.

Third Congressional District (Johnson County, parts of Douglas County):
Stephene Moore, the wife of retiring Democratic U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore will face Thomas Scherer of Prairie Village in the democratic primary.

Nine Republicans will vie for the GOP nomination: Dan Gilyeat of Kansas City, Kan; Dave King and Jerry Malone, both of Leawood; Garry R. Klotz of Lenexa; Patricia Lightner of Olathe; and Craig McPherson, John Rysavy, Jean Ann Uvodich and Kevin Yoder, all of Overland Park. Jasmin Talbot is the Libertarian candidate.

Second Congressional District (Leavenworth County, parts of Douglas County, Topeka, Manhattan, southeast Kansas): incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins of Topeka faces state Sen. Dennis Pyle of Hiawatha in the GOP primary.

Cheryl Hudspeth of Girard; Thomas Koch of Leavenworth and Sean Tevis of Olathe will contend for the Democratic nomination. Robert Garrard is the Libertarian candidate.

Governor: Republican U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback and his lieutenant governor candidate, state Sen. Jeff Colyer of Overland Park, face Joan Heffington of Wichita and her running mate, Mark Holick, in the GOP primary.

The winner faces Democratic state Sen. Tom Holland of Baldwin City and his running mate, state Sen. Kelly Kultala of Kansas City, Kan. Andrew P. Gray and running mate Stacey Davis will campaign for the Libertarians, and Ken W. Cannon and running mate Dan Faubion will run as Reform Party candidates.

Attorney General:
Incumbent Steve Six, a Democrat, faces the winner of a GOP primary between state Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt and Junction City prosecutor Ralph De Zago. Dennis Hawver is the Libertarian candidate.

Treasurer: Incumbent Dennis McKinney, a Democrat, faces Republican Ron Estes of Wichita.

Insurance Commissioner: Incumbent Sandy Praeger faces a primary challenger, David J. Powell of El Dorado in the Republican primary.

Secretary of State: Incumbent Chris Biggs, a Democrat, faces a primary battle with state Sen. Chris Steineger of Kansas City, Kan. Three Republicans contend for their party’s nomination: J.R. Claeys of Salina; Shawnee County Election Commissioner Elizabeth Ensley; and law professor Kris Kobach, of the Piper community in Wyandotte County.

Phillip Horatio Lucas and Derek Langseth will run for the Libertarian and Reform party, respectively.



Johnson County legislative races:

Dolores Furtado, an Overland Park Republican, faces the winner of a GOP primary race between Jim Denning and James A. Walker Jr., both of Overland Park. Jeffrey S. Caldwell II of Overland Park is the Libertarian candidate.

In the seat being vacated by Yoder, Rob McKnight, a GOP consultant turned Democratic candidate from Overland Park, will face the winner of a three-way GOP primary between Rob Bruchman, Stephanie Sawyer Clayton and Matthew Webb, all of Overland Park.

Rep. Jill Quigley, a Lenexa Republican, faces Lenexa Republican Kelly Meigs in the GOP primary. The winner will face Democrat Bryan Cox of Shawnee and Libertarian Michael Kerner of Lenexa.

Rep. Sheryl Spalding, an Overland Park Republican, will contend with Overland Park resident Richard Downing in the GOP primary. The winner faces Democrat Doug Dowell, also of Overland Park.

The father of murdered teen Kelsey Smith, Greg Smith, will run as a Republican against Rep. Lisa Benlon, an Overland Park Democrat.

Rep. Lance Kinzer, an Olathe Republican, will defend his seat against Democrat Elliot Lahn. Rep. Arlen Siegfreid, an Olathe Republican, faces Democrat Steve Wright. Gene Rardin, an Overland Park Democrat, will face Amanda Grosserode, a Lenexa Republican.

Republican challenger John Rubin will attempt to unseat Rep. Cindy Neighbor, a Shawnee Democrat. Rep. Milack Talia, a Merriam Democrat, faces Republican Brett Hildabrand.

Rep Mike Slattery

Rep. Mike Slattery will lock horns with Michael Foltz

Rep. Mike Slattery, a Mission Democrat, will vie with Roeland Park Republican Michael Foltz. Leawood Democrat Elise Chapline will seek to unseat Rep. Pat Colloton, a Leawood Republican. Democrat Roberta Eveslage of Lenexa will take on Rep. Anthony Brown, a Eudora Republican. Rep. Owen Donohoe, a Shawnee Republican, will defend his seat against Democrat Joe Novak. Democrat Kevin King of Gardner faces Rep. Mike Kiegerl, an Olathe Republican.

Rep. Scott Schwab, an Olathe Republican, faces Democratic challenger Keith Mace. Shana Althouse, a Fairway Democrat, will try to unseat Rep. Barbara Bollier, a Mission Hills Republican. Rep. Kay Wolf, a Prairie Village Republican, will defend her seat against Democrat Joe Hoffman and Libertarian Robert J. McElwain.

In Kansas’ only state Senate race this year, Sen. Terrie Huntington, a Fairway Republican, will defend her seat against David Harvey of Mission Hills in the GOP primary. The winner faces Democrat Wayne E. Hodges of Mission.

Wyandotte County: Rep. Stan Frownfelter, a Kansas City, Kan. Democrat, faces Republican Eric Hite. Republican Chiquita Coggs will seek to oust Rep. Broderick Henderson, a Kansas City, Kan. Democrat.

In the race to succeed retiring Rep. Margaret Long, a Kansas City Democrat, Kathy Wolfe Moore and Ronald Witt will square off in the Democratic Primary, with the winner facing Republican Earl Freeman.

Leavenworth County: Republican Sandra Bohne will challenge Rep. Melanie Meier, a Leavenworth Democrat. Democrat Jim Pittman of Lansing will take on Rep. Connie O’Brien, a Tonganoxie Republican.

Three candidates will seek to replace retiring Rep. Marti Crow, a Leavenworth Democrat. Democrat Nancy Bauder will face the winner of the GOP primary contest between Jana Taylor Goodman and Louis Klemp.

Incumbent lawmakers facing no opposition this year are Rep. Marvin Kleeb, an Overland Park Republican; Rep. Rob Olson, an Olathe Republican; House Majority Leader Ray Merrick, a Stilwell Republican; Rep. Ron Worley, a Lenexa Republican; and representatives Louis Ruiz, Tom Burroughs, Valdenia Winn and Mike Peterson, all Kansas City, Kan. Democrats.
