Dotson suspect arrested

SHAWNEE, KAN – Police have arrested a man in connection to the death of a Chris Dotson, a 22-year-old college student who was found dead in his Shawnee apartment earlier this week. Authorities arrested Eddie Lamar Thomas, 23, early Saturday morning. “I want justice and I want the person to know who did this to my son, I forgive them,” said Latrice Dotson, Chris’s mother. “And now I feel sorry for his mom, the suspect’s mom, because she’s hurting just like I’m hurting.”

Dotson, 22, was found dead in his apartment at 67th and Lackman Road in Shawnee by his mother on Wednesday after he did not show up to work on Monday or Tuesday. Dotson, who was set to graduate from UMKC in December, was last seen at an ATM last Sunday night, and made a post on Facebook and used his cell phone shortly after 8 p.m. on Sunday. On Friday, police and Metro Squad officers searched a pond in front of Dotson’s apartment complex.
The Overland Park Underwater Search and Rescue team combed the murky water on Friday searching for possible weapons or personal effects that might help police in the investigation. Now that police have arrested a suspect, Dotson’s mother said she and her family will move forward in honor of her son’s memory. “My son’s soul and spirit is free, and that’s how I want to be,” she said. “I want to be free. I want to be free. I don’t want to hold in hatred and be mad and angry. I have peace and I’m happy. I have peace.”
She said it won’t be easy, but it’s what her son would want.
