BEVERLY HILLS — Tiffany Haddish is an African American Jew and she celebrated her 40th birthday on Tuesday by throwing a “Black Mitzvah” at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills to ring in her newfound heritage. Billy Crystal, Jimmy Kimmel, Wanda Sykes, Sarah Silverman, Kevin Nealon, Sinbad and Charlamagne tha God were among the many celebs in attendance. In case you didn’t know, Tiffany discovered she was half Jewish when she turned 27-years-old. That’s when she met her father who’s an Eritrean Jew.
“For a long time, I didn’t even know black Jews existed,” Tiffany told Alma, a website for Jews.
“I didn’t know anything about Judaism for a long time.”

Realizing she had a bunch of homework to do, the “Girls Trip” actress spent the past few years studying Hebrew while learning Jewish culture and her proficiency is reflected in a new stand-up comedy special. Tiffany’s “Black Mitzvah” premiered Tuesday on Netflix, the same day as the shindig.
So far, it’s drawn mixed reviews.
