ATLANTA — After facing stiff competition from prepossessing popsies worldwide, South Africa’s Zozibini Tunzi was crowned Miss Universe on Sunday at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta — becoming the first black winner in 8 years. The 26-year-old beauty queen subjugated 89 contestants, finishing ahead of runner-ups Miss Mexico [Sofia Aragon] and Miss Puerto [Rico Madison Anderson]. “I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me — with my kind of skin and my kind of hair — was never considered to be beautiful,” said Zozibini. “I think it is time that that stops today. I want children to look at me and see my face and I want them to see their faces reflected in mine.”

Donning a green and gold blazer, Steve Harvey hosted the pageant for the fifth time and, reminiscent of the debacle in 2015 when he announced the wrong winner, the 62-year-old comedian screwed up again. Steve said Miss Philippines won the costume contest. But the aspirant standing next to him was Miss Malaysia who alertly grabbed the mic and said, “It’s not Philippines; it’s Malaysia.” A frustrated Steve retorted, “I just read that in the teleprompter. Y’all got to quit doing this to me. I can read.”
Earlier in the competition, Zozibini was asked, “What is the most important thing you should be teaching young girls today?” Her response was leadership. “It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time … because of what society has labeled women to be,” Zozibini explained.
“I think we are the most powerful beings in the world, and that we should be given every opportunity, and that is what we should be teaching these young girls, to take up space.”
