KANSAS CITY — As I’m working out at the gym, I’m watching a lady do about 1000 sit ups. I can practically see her thinking that when she finishes putting herself through all that torture, her stomach roll will somehow magically disappear. Nope. It’s still there. And it’s not just her… It’s all of us. As a society, we have such an obsession with having a flat stomach. But straight talk… we only want to do part of the work it takes to get it. As the old adage goes, “Abs are made in the kitchen.”

That’s right. Roughly 80% of the work you need to do on those abs happens through your daily eating plan [also known as your diet]. You can’t eat 3200 calories and 109 grams of fat, then burn 450 calories at the gym and expect to get a flat stomach. No, no, no. You do the math.

What I’m saying is the time you spend on sit-ups and crunches would be better spent planning your diet. You can’t out-work a bad diet, folks. There’s no out-running a dozen Dunkin Donuts. So instead of hitting the gym to do 1,000 sit-ups, how about hitting the kitchen with just a few good ideas?

  1. I’ve tried many diets and couldn’t make anything work. Since having my first child, I’ve been carrying around an extra 30 pounds.

  2. I have thrown so much against the wall trying to lose 50 lbs over the past two and a half years. The first year, I managed to lost about 12 lbs and for the rest of that time, it was the same four lbs over and over again. So we checked my thyroid, it was low. Yay, pills. Then another year of exercise and eating “clean” and still, the same four lbs, lose, gain, lose, gain. About a month ago, my doctor handed me an “elimination dietary plan”. To sort out my stomach troubles. I’ve lost 10 lbs in the past four weeks, not changing my exercising. Apparently I am allergic to about half of the “healthy foods” I was eating. Chicken and eggs (goodbye egg whites), Peanuts (goodbye natural peanut butter on apple slices) Oats (I really miss you), corn (no more air popped popcorn or corn on the cob)beef, pork, buffalo, almonds, cashews and of course both dairy and wheat that I already knew about since they’ve been issues my entire life. I don’t count calories, I just try to hit my total protein, carb and freshie servings every day using foods like ground turkey (my new bff) tuna, salmon, a protein shake, roasted cauliflower, zucchini noodles, fruits, salads, avocados, sunflower seeds, bean, rice and potatoes. I’ve had the occasional french fries, and some fruit juice here and there, but that’s about as far as I’ve strayed from the list. Sometimes, it’s really not simply calories in/calories out. Because if that was true, I would have lost all 50 lbs two years ago, according to my fitness tracker and myfitpal food diary.

  3. Pretty good article, beats most out there, and there is truth to be read here.

  4. Or you can exercise and have a rational diet.
Honestly, it is NOT that hard. You just can’t expect to see immediate results.

  5. Basically nothing is good for you and we are all screwed….
