BURNSVILLE, Minn. — “🎵The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire! We don’t need no water. Let the mothaf*cka burn!🎵” Legendary R&B artist Alexander O’Neal is lucky to be alive after he burned down his cheap apartment in Burnsville, Minnesota. The blazing inferno transpired on December 5, 2025 just hours after the “Sunshine” singer was released from a 2-week stay in the hospital. According to reports, Alexander’s white wife — Cynthia O’Neal — woke up around 1 a.m. and descried fire on the cord of her husband’s oxygen concentrator. Alexander hopped out of bed and burned his foot while trying to stomp out the flames. Next thing you know, their entire third floor apartment was set ablaze — setting off fire sprinklers and the alarm. There was water all over the f*ckin’ place. Three other units were also destroyed. Alexander and Cynthia stumbled down three flights of stairs, egressed the complex and called 911. They were transported to a nearby hospital where they were examined and released.

Most of their belongings, however, went up in smoke.

“There was nothing left. There was water up to my ankles,” Cynthia recounted to TMZ. “We are so happy to be alive. We may not have a toothbrush, but we have a car! Our spirits remain good and we are moving forward.” Cynthia said prior to the fire, Alexander spent a couple of weeks in intensive care on life support, where he was treated for an enlarged heart and bacterial pneumonia.

Alexander, 72, rose to fame in the mid-80s before a crack cocaine addiction derailed his métier.

The smoked out vocalist was lead singer of “The Time” when Prince fired his black ass and hired Morris Day as his replacement.
