MIAMI — Suicide, homicide or femicide? Family and friends are in mourning after 27-year-old Tonea Nicole Miller was found dangling from a tree 🌴 in Gwen Cherry Park in Miami, Florida. The hanging transpired around 6:20 a.m. on June 18, 2026. Tonea — a resident of Flint, Michigan — was in town to celebrate Juneteenth which is ironic because it was commonplace for lynched slaves to have nooses wrapped tightly around their necks. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office ruled Tonea’s quietus a suicide after detectives “conducted a thorough investigation” and found “no evidence of foul play.” The case, as of now, remains closed. “The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office understands the death of Tonea Miller has generated concern within the community,” Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said in a statement. “[We extend our] condolences to her family as they navigate this tragic loss.”
Social media reaction was highly skeptical. One commenter wrote, “A daughter, a friend, a whole life ahead of her — found lynched from a tree on June 18th after traveling to Miami to celebrate Juneteenth. A Black woman gone in the most haunting way — and almost no media attention. Imagine if a white woman had been found hanging from a tree, front page news! There are still more questions than answers. Is it murder? A hate crime? Suicide? No matter what — it should be discussed, not swept under a rug.”
Another chimed in with:
Juneteenth and a black woman hanging from a tree screams investigate white folks. You don’t just take your own life when you’re out of state celebrating something… That doesn’t happen.”
A third person added, “How do we know a nigga didn’t do it then set it up to make it look like the Ku Klux Klan did?😮”
Black Lives Matter shared a post on Instagram, calling for “Justice for Tonea Miller” before adding, “The media silence is deafening.”
Tonea was a student at Mott Community College.
Her phone, that could’ve been used as evidence, was missing from the scene of the incident.

People who live there believe the police were involved in the lynching I read when the story first came out. Police are denying it, i think they did it.There was another lynching of a young black man near the police station months prior of course they tried to say he committed suicide.

They know damn well this young lady did not hang herself. I remember a few years ago when I went to Texas, they found a black woman hung in front of a walgreens.
