Martha Reeves ripped for abusing national anthem

We still love Martha.

SPRINGFIELD — “🎵O say, can you seeee. By the dawn’s early light…🎵” I’ll preface this opprobrium by saying Martha Reeves is a legend. Back in the 60s, she and the Vandellas scored gigantic hits like “Dancing in the Street” and “Heatwave.” Martha was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. And she received her own star ⭐ on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2024. Again, Martha is a legend. Her legacy is cemented in greatness. But Martha’s off-key rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the inauguration of the Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPBL) ⚾ ain’t one of her proudest moments. As a matter of fact, Martha was downright brutal. All hell broke loose when the Motown luminary took the field on August 1, 2026 at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois — before the game between the New York Heights and the Los Angeles Queens.

That’s when Martha grabbed the mic and proceeded to howl like a sick coyote. Her vocals broke glass and she warbled the strongest vibrato in sports history. Players and coaches struggled to keep a straight countenance. Fans were like, “What the f*ck?” Martha’s singing was so offensive, the WPBL almost experienced a grand closing on the same day as its grand opening. Martha was that bad.
The white backup singers attempted to succor by drowning her out.
But Martha got louder and louder.
She damn near cracked my computer screen.
Social media reaction was priceless.
One commenter wrote, “She woke up all of my dead dogs.”
Another chimed in with, “The American flag 🇱🇷 went limp, lol.😂”
A third person added, “And I thought Fergie’s national anthem was bad. This takes the cake.”
After suffering a savage beating from critics, Martha blamed poor field conditions for the terrible performance.
“Having just celebrated my 85th birthday, I’ve learned a great deal over more than 60 years of performing live,” she told TMZ.
“It was an incredible honor to be invited to perform at the inaugural Women’s Professional Baseball League event and to help celebrate such a historic moment for women in sports. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. The field conditions were wet and windy, and without stage monitors I wasn’t able to hear myself as I normally would. While it wasn’t the performance I had hoped for, I’m grateful to have been there in support of these remarkable athletes and this groundbreaking league.”
Should we give Martha a pass?

DAMN! Of all the singers to select to sing the National Anthem, how was Martha Reeves in the top 10,000?
The white women were trying to save the day but her ego wouldn’t allow it. She is atrociously horrible because she actually did rehearsal and everybody was saying how bad it was so these other women we’re trying to help but she didn’t want any parts of it and felt they were making her sound bad what’s today weren’t doing good either but they were like Mariah Carey in comparison to her
Maybe vocal exercises and practicing will help her.
Now that’s a D.E.I hire 😂😂😂
She was coming for Patti Labelle with those high notes😂
My, how the mighty hath fallen.
SWAT teams should play this in a continuous loop when dealing with a barricaded subject that refuses to come out.
That was Absolutely Horrible..!! Is this what our troops are fighting for?!? 😖🤭
Unfortunately, she has lost her voice like many others such as Dionne Warwick and Mavis Staples. But thank God Gladys Knight still has her voice after many years of singing.
Poor Martha. She tried and that’s a very hard song. It seemed like she was trying to sing in a style that doesn’t match with the music she used to make…music that I love even though it was before my time. Hopefully, she’ll be ok after this performance and the negative feedback. It had to be hard and nerve wracking putting herself out there well past her prime.
Poor Martha! She can’t sing like she used to, but at 85, she’s still out there working hard to earn a living. And this one performance will NOT be her legacy. She has far too many great songs throughout her storied career. She’ll be remembered for those musical contributions to the world & not this!
No disrespect to the backup singers but she needed the vandellas
Holy fuck that was bad 😂😂
Martha Reeves is 85 years old. 🤷🏽♀️ Cut her some slack.
