Chiefs leaving Missouri to build a stadium in Kansas

Kansas wins Chiefs sweepstakes.

TOPEKA — “🎵Fish don’t fry in the kitchen. Beans don’t burn on the grill…🎵” Yessir. Our Kansas City Chiefs are movin’ on up like George & Weezy. Just moments after Monday’s Legislative Coordinating Council (LCC) conclave, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly announced our Chiefs are egressing Missouri’s Truman Sports Complex to join the Sunflower State🌻 where they’ll receive a billion dollar, state-of-the-art, domed stadium encircled by an entertainment district at Village West in Wyandotte County. Now that’s one helluva Christmas gift🎁. “This agreement to bring the Chiefs to Kansas takes our state to the next level,” Governor Kelly said at a news conference. “With this new stadium, we’re creating thousands of jobs, bringing in tourists from around the world, attracting young people, and most importantly, we’re continuing to make Kansas the best place in America to raise a family. This is a game-changer for Kansas, and it’s a signal to America and the world that our state’s future is very bright.”
If you recall, in April 2024, Jackson County taxpayers could’ve voted “yes” on a 0.375% sales tax to keep the Chiefs in the Show Me State for another 30 or 40 years.
But, instead, they checked the “no” box on the ballot.
Yes, the rollout was poor.
And the Chiefs gave a half-ass effort during the entire process.
But it was a chance to keep ’em in Missouri sans free agency.
Now they’re sold to the highest bidder.

In addition to a new dome, our Chiefs will receive new headquarters and a training facility in Olathe. The project will also deliver restaurants, hotels, bars, shops and 20,000 new jobs. We’re talkin’ an economic impact of $4 billion coupled with annual revenues of $1.06 billion once everything opens. Owner Clark Hunt and other team officials attended the meeting. The new stadium will have construction costs of $3 billion and up to 70 percent of that will be covered by Kansas Sales Tax and Revenue (STAR) Bonds.
In other words, Kansas lawmakers gave Hunt a check for $2.1 billion to build his playhouse.
Even Stevie Wonder can see 👀 Kansas proffered a much better package than what Missouri put on the table.
Keep in mind, liquor tax is an integral part of STAR Bond financing.
So every time an alcoholic guzzles a beer🍺, debts are being amortized.
The stadium will be publicly owned, which means the Chiefs will pay $7 million in base rent (adjusted annually for inflation) and won’t pay taxes.
The training facility and headquarters will also be publicly owned.
The Chiefs are currently paying $1.1 million in rent at the Truman Sports Complex.
So they’ll pay 7 times that amount in Kansas.
Damn.
It took the council less than 30 minutes to pass the STAR vote.
Senate President Ty Masterson said, “Kansas won the Super Bowl.”
“This is a big win our state really needed,” Masterson added.
“As someone who loves watching the big game every week, I can tell you this will make the football experience better for Chiefs Kingdom. The overall fan experience will be greatly improved with this new stadium: better seats, enhanced tailgating, and smoother traffic flow to and from games.”
Wyandotte County Mayor Christal Watson called the coup a “major economic win” before thanking the Chiefs for “choosing Kansas as their next home!”
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, who was visibly disappointed, said, “While the Chiefs aren’t going far away… today is a setback as a Kansas Citian.”
Unfortunately, our Chiefs are leaving Arrowhead Stadium — the loudest outdoor arena in the world where tailgating is second to none.
The 53-year-old arena is also incredibly well-built, smells like barbecue, and provides the best gameday experience in the NFL.
Arrowhead is one of the reasons our Chiefs appeared in 5 Super Bowls in 6 years, culminating in 3 Lombardi Trophies 🏆🏆🏆.
“It’s gonna be a sad day, I tell ya,” former running back Christian Okoye told reporters.
“Arrowhead Stadium is one of those places that everybody talks about, all over the league, all over the nation. It’s just an iconic place… We’re gonna miss it greatly.”
Missouri has now relinquished three NFL franchises.
The St. Louis Cardinals moved to Arizona.
The St. Louis Rams migrated to Los Angeles.
And our Chiefs are headed west across the state line.
“Hey America – Kansas isn’t a flay-over state; We’re a touchdown state,” Governor Kelly tweeted.
Hunt said he’s already having chinwags with NFL owners about bringing a Super Bowl to the City of Champions.
Say what you will.
The bottom line is Kansas kicked Missouri’s ass (à la Mike Tyson over Michael Spinks).
Are you excited about the new direction of our Chiefs?
Will you purchase a personal seat license (PSL)?

@Michael Gott: If it wasnt for Kansas steppin up the Chiefs would be headed to San Antonio.
I think this was a terrible decision. Football is an outdoor sport. How many games have the Chiefs won in the cold, snow, ice and rain because our opponents were not able to handle as well. Also, I am willing to guess that, while there will be fewer seats for the regular fans, there will be increase capacity in the luxury boxes. This is all about money. And the folks up in St. Joe get screwed too!
Lots of money to spend for something that will get used maybe a dozen times a year.
Thanks a lot Jackson County voters
Kansas had a plan and executed. KCMO, Jackson County, and the state of Missouri had 50+ years to develop the area around the Truman Sports Complex and did nothing. They were late to the game with a plan for keeping the Chiefs. Decline is a choice. Voters on the Missouri made their choice at the ballot box for over 5 decades. Want different results? Try something different.
A domed stadium is a disaster
No more winning any Super Bowl past 2031. It’s over
When Mahomes is out we’re the worst team in the NFL
@gimmiK87: The same can be said for any NFL team that loses their starting quarterback
Maybe its just me, but i stuck through all of the virtue signaling, woke stuff and just general hollywood-ish bs from the nfl, looked past all the instagram fashion zoolander runway crap, and thought there was nothing my team could do to get me to disown the Chiefs. This has been an atrocious season, and i can remember when the only way we’d score was Nick Lowery. All that said, moving to ks may be the straw, affectively you are disenfranchising your base, i get it maybe the thought “was bad season move to ks, we are rebuilding it all” but i will never be on board with this move. I dont care if the seats have removable front teeth and pistol grips for ears, nose bleeds in Arrowhead were worth it, a dome will always suck and not in a good way. Clark “the fans made arrowhead” with out Arrowhead will there be fans?
I can’t afford tickets now. It’s already too expensive. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to go to another game… certainly not with my family. A new stadium and higher prices almost guarantees I won’t get to see a game there. It’s heartbreaking.
I’m still upset about the Baltimore Colts moving to Indianapolis.
Clark is a little greedy billionaire rat man
Lifelong Chiefs fan… I won’t watch another game. Clark Hunt is a sello
“Today 36 year old Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas Chiefs try to bounce back from last week’s loss to the Santa Clara 49ers by taking on the Northwest Indiana Bears at (insert corporate name here). A few lucky fans will be granted the privilege of paying one month’s salary to attend.” Thanks, NFL, for ruining the only sport I could still stand watching.
The new stadium will be catered to the wine and cheese crowd. It will be half as loud. Tailgating will be limited to paid areas. They have 2 billion to pay off, they’ll want fans to buy food and drink in the high tax district. It’s all about $ to the Hunts. They stabbed Missouri in the back. I hope nothing but the worst for the Hunts and ks. I hope it’s a complete financial disaster for the leeching state of ks
I’m not going to be a chiefs fan come 2031. They just spit in the face of any real fan. Leaving Missouri isn’t the Hangup it’s the fact they are abandoning arrowhead and its legacy. You’re not a real fan if leaving arrowhead doesn’t bother you. Once it’s Missouri era is over so are the chiefs. They gained no new fans going to Kansas but alienated all their real Missouri fans for money.
The Jackson County voters had a chance to keep the Chiefs. They decided no. This was a foregone conclusion after the vote.
Home field advantage wont be the same
Hey folks. Former😢Rams STL fan here. Chiefs are staying in the area. STL completely lost a team. It will be a change but our KC Chiefs are staying in the area.
Missouri does not know how to keep professional sports teams in their state: St. Louis Cardinals/Arizona Cardinals, St. Louis Rams, Kansas City Chiefs moving to Kansas), MLB’s Kansas City Athletics (now Oakland A’s), NBA’s Kansas City Kings (now Sacramento Kings), NHL’s Kansas City Scouts (now New Jersey Devils), and NBA’s St. Louis Hawks (now Atlanta Hawks).
Have any of you complainers ever been to a modern stadium? Arrowhead is a dump.
I can’t stand Clark Hunt for this. Why leave a stadium you just hosted 6 AFC titles games in?
Maybe 20k jobs but those will most be temporary through construction.
If kansas voted on the stadium I don’t believe it would have passed
The Royals and Chiefs will have fewer regular seats because they want to create more luxury suites which is where THE MONEY IS. An empty but paid-for suite is worth more than 30 butts-in-seats. That’s a fact across both leagues. But domes suck. At least have a retractable roof.
Andy Reid thinks we’re just going to follow them over the border 🙄 We don’t spend any money in Kansas. Never have, never will.
Missourians need to boycott the chiefs!!! Let
Kansas fill the stadium and buy the merchandise!!!
Can’t blame the Chiefs or even the rascal politicians…the people decided to not renovate an old stadium with a profoundly modest tax increase. Its the people’s decision. Thank goodness the people of Louisiana and New Orleans don’t make such bone headed decisions because I enjoy Super Bowl coming to town regularly. Kansas will get a taste of that too. Who Dat?
@RedDragon: The problem was that Jackson County hiked property taxes up illegally to inflated numbers, then tried to propose a sales tax to cover the home of the Chiefs. Voters weren’t going for it.
Jobs, jobs, jobs but what kind of jobs? After the construction is done, the jobs that remain are mostly in the service industry – hotel, retail, restaurant – lower paying, many part-time. Stadium jobs are seasonal and event-dependent and also lower paying.
Wyandotte County is ass. Why not Johnson or Douglas?
does this mean kansans will have a tax increase?
@Walmart Cashier: there is no sales tax increase with star bonds. the sales tax revenue to pay off star bonds is simply the additional sales tax generated from the new chiefs district and all risk is incurred by bond holders and the chiefs. kansas outsmarted the slave me state again
@Walmart Cashier: Best part of this deal is it doesn’t raise taxes for Kansan’s. They are using money from sports gambling and the lottery to finance it.
Time to void the lease at Arrowhead. They want to go, get the fuck out now.
Theres nothing around Arrowhead to keep them there. No hotels no businessess. Nothing. They werent going to bring in anymore than what is out there now. If it was true they had 50+years to build around Arrowhead. Jackson County just a bunch of lazy MFers. Chiefs and Clark are smart to get the hell out of Missouri and Jackson County.
The NFL, the owners, some players, and investors have BILLIONS OF DOLLARS.. WHY DO THEY CONTINUE TO RAPE THE PUBLIC FOR THEIR SHIT? NO ONE NEEDS, NO ONE CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT A STUPID STADIUM.. Build it yourselves. Politicians may lose their bribes but that’s not our responsibility either..
Once a city loses a NFL franchise, it’s a death knell, billions of lost revenue for a city.
It’s still baffles me that people pay hundreds if not thousands of dollars to go to these football games and support these teams that could care less about you. Not to mention the games are rigged.
Ever since the NFL started rigging games……WHO CARES. !!!
It’s probably just a coincidence that the rigging coincided with the nfl ‘partnering’ with Big Gambling.
There is nothing around Arrowhead Stadium. Leaving was a no-brainer. The legends area is already a entertainment district with the new amusement park that the Hunt family is building in kansas.
I don’t know why people are upset! They will still be the Kansas City Chiefs! Kansas made a business decision to entice them to move to a new stadium in a very nice area in the Metro area. The Hunt family will be paying for a large portion of the new stadium and they have been great for Kansas City for many years! Everyone needs to grow up! This country has produced a bunch of weak whiney baby men! Sad!
I’m going to miss Burrowhead
The governor forgot to mention that this world class stadium will be so expensive, most of you will not be able to afford tickets to go there.
So, once again the taxpayers are going to pay for the billionaires to make more billions, while their kids go to school everyday in 100 year old asbestos filled buildings.
I am from Missouri. I am happy that we are not paying a billion bucks for these losers.
somewhere lamar hunt is turning in his grave
