TOPEKA — “🎵Fish don’t fry in the kitchen. Beans don’t burn on the grill…🎵” Yessir. Our Kansas City Chiefs are movin’ on up like George & Weezy. Just moments after Monday’s Legislative Coordinating Council (LCC) conclave, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly announced our Chiefs are egressing Missouri’s Truman Sports Complex to join the Sunflower State🌻 where they’ll receive a billion dollar, state-of-the-art, domed stadium encircled by an entertainment district at Village West in Wyandotte County. Now that’s one helluva Christmas gift🎁. “This agreement to bring the Chiefs to Kansas takes our state to the next level,” Governor Kelly said at a news conference. “With this new stadium, we’re creating thousands of jobs, bringing in tourists from around the world, attracting young people, and most importantly, we’re continuing to make Kansas the best place in America to raise a family. This is a game-changer for Kansas, and it’s a signal to America and the world that our state’s future is very bright.”
If you recall, in April 2024, Jackson County taxpayers could’ve voted “yes” on a 0.375% sales tax to keep the Chiefs in the Show Me State for another 30 or 40 years.
But, instead, they checked the “no” box on the ballot.
Yes, the rollout was poor.
And the Chiefs gave a half-ass effort during the entire process.
But it was a chance to keep ’em in Missouri sans free agency.
Now they’re sold to the highest bidder.
In addition to a new dome, our Chiefs will receive new headquarters and a training facility in Olathe. The project will also deliver restaurants, hotels, bars, shops and 20,000 new jobs. We’re talkin’ an economic impact of $4 billion coupled with annual revenues of $1.06 billion once everything opens. Owner Clark Hunt and other team officials attended the meeting. The new stadium will have construction costs of $3 billion and up to 70 percent of that will be covered by Kansas Sales Tax and Revenue (STAR) Bonds.
In other words, Kansas lawmakers gave Hunt a check for $2.1 billion to build his playhouse.
Even Stevie Wonder can see 👀 Kansas proffered a much better package than what Missouri put on the table.
Keep in mind, liquor tax is an integral part of STAR Bond financing.
So every time an alcoholic guzzles a beer🍺, debts are being amortized.
The stadium will be publicly owned, which means the Chiefs will pay $7 million in base rent (adjusted annually for inflation) and won’t pay taxes.
The training facility and headquarters will also be publicly owned.
The Chiefs are currently paying $1.1 million in rent at the Truman Sports Complex.
So they’ll pay 7 times that amount in Kansas.
Damn.
It took the council less than 30 minutes to pass the STAR vote.
Senate President Ty Masterson said, “Kansas won the Super Bowl.”
“This is a big win our state really needed,” Masterson added.
“As someone who loves watching the big game every week, I can tell you this will make the football experience better for Chiefs Kingdom. The overall fan experience will be greatly improved with this new stadium: better seats, enhanced tailgating, and smoother traffic flow to and from games.”
Wyandotte County Mayor Christal Watson called the coup a “major economic win” before thanking the Chiefs for “choosing Kansas as their next home!”
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, who was visibly disappointed, said, “While the Chiefs aren’t going far away… today is a setback as a Kansas Citian.”
Unfortunately, our Chiefs are leaving Arrowhead Stadium — the loudest outdoor arena in the world where tailgating is second to none.
The 53-year-old arena is also incredibly well-built, smells like barbecue, and provides the best gameday experience in the NFL.
Arrowhead is one of the reasons our Chiefs appeared in 5 Super Bowls in 6 years, culminating in 3 Lombardi Trophies 🏆🏆🏆.
“It’s gonna be a sad day, I tell ya,” former running back Christian Okoye told reporters.
“Arrowhead Stadium is one of those places that everybody talks about, all over the league, all over the nation. It’s just an iconic place… We’re gonna miss it greatly.”
Missouri has now relinquished three NFL franchises.
The St. Louis Cardinals moved to Arizona.
The St. Louis Rams migrated to Los Angeles.
And our Chiefs are headed west across the state line.
“Hey America – Kansas isn’t a flay-over state; We’re a touchdown state,” Governor Kelly tweeted.
Hunt said he’s already having chinwags with NFL owners about bringing a Super Bowl to the City of Champions.

The bottom line is Kansas kicked Missouri’s ass (à la Mike Tyson over Michael Spinks).

This will be the undoing of the Chiefs in the KC area. Missouri fans will and should quit the Chiefs, Kansas fans will wake up to the theft of there tax dollars, Mahomes will retire, the area around the dome will rundown because the only ones who get rich from a stadium is the owners and players. The dome will deteriorate quickly like the one in St Louis, and New Orleans, and by 2040 they will threaten the tax payer with leaving, with unreasonable demands and ultimately leave for a new city that’s willing to fund them another 10 years. As a proud Kansan, I applaud the move. Arrowhead is old as fuck and we’re sick and tired of freezing our asses off to watch a playoff game in January.
Chiefs moved because of greed and butt hurt over voters not giving them more. They suckered a bunch of gullible lawmakers in Kansas in to paying for their stuff without a vote of the people. Superbowls are a farce, if they get one that’ll be it, no one wants to visit Kansas in February, get real!

It will most likely be a completely different Chiefs era of football with a completely differently regime at hand. Theres already a crack in the foundation as it is.
And in 2056 Gracie Hunt will pimp slap the Free State of Kansas and relocate the team back to Dallas in honor of her father and grandfather, bringing it back home.
Jackson County is no longer a top tier county. Once they tear down Arrowhead there will be nothin but a big hole in the middle of the city. What will they build there? A housing project? This is a sad day for Missouri.

Jackson County residents had two voting opportunities to keep the Chiefs at Arrowhead. The first vote was when the rolling roof was defeated but other renovations approved. The Chiefs would stay if there was a roof already in place.

I’m excited and bummed at the same time. Excited for a new stadium and what it could bring but bummed it means Arrowhead will be going away. But for those mad at the situation, if there’s anyone you should be mad at, it should be the leadership in Missouri that did nothing to keep the Chiefs. From the local leaders that didn’t build up around the sports complex to state leaders that claimed to have a plan to keep them and then clearly didn’t execute on that plan.
Arrowhead is out of date. Kaufmann is out of date. Truman Sports Complex is out of date. Progress happens, you can tear yourself apart hoping it won’t but it always does. Best to accept it and make peace with it and be glad they didn’t move to Oklahoma City, St Louis, or Omaha or something like that.
Lucky they are not going to become the San Antonio Chiefs. I mean can someone tell me if at any typical home game if there are more people in the seats from KCMO than KCKS or people from surrounding towns in both MO and KS? The Chiefs belong to all of us in my mind. I’ve been a Chiefs fan for 57 years and as long as they are the Kansas City Chiefs (MO or KS) they will have my support.
You Missourians had a chance to keep the Chiefs and Arrowhead but there was a cost to that which apparently was unacceptable. Don’t necessarily blame y’all for not wanting to pay it. I’m a Kansan and I leaned toward wanting to stay in Arrowhead. I would look on the bright side especially since Clark Hunt has said he intends to build a home field noise advantage and a good tailgating experience into the new stadium. How are you going to have a Super Bowl in a place, Kansas or Missouri that is likely to have a wind chill of negative 10 below, likely to have an ice storm, stopping the playing teams from even making it in town, who wants to walk around doing activities for the Super Bowl in temperatures in the teens, it’s an ignorant concept.
