PHOENIX — This is why they call it “March Madness.” South Carolina spanked UConn 62-48 Friday night in the national semifinals of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. But the real drama transpired in the handshake line after the game. That’s when UConn head coach Geno Auriemma, 72, and South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley, 55, damn near came to blows. ESPN cameras caught ’em arguing before both had to be separated. Staley — a lesbian — can be heard yelling, “I will beat Geno’s ass!” The incident stemmed from Auriemma’s frustration with the referees. Sarah Strong tore her own jersey, but Auriemma felt a foul should’ve been called. Staley also cussed out the referees without being hit with a technical. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the old man unleashed a profanity-laced diatribe on national TV during an interview with Holly Rowe.
“There were six fouls called that quarter, all of them against us,” Auriemma vented. “And they’ve been beating the sh*t out of our guys down there the entire game. And I’m not making excuses because we haven’t been able to make a shot. But this is ridiculous. Their coach rants and raves on the sideline and calls the referees some names you don’t want to hear… I got a kid with a ripped jersey and [the referees] go, ‘I didn’t see it.’ Come on, man. This is for the national championship.”
Social media reaction was off the chain.
One commenter wrote, “Poor Geno crying like a big baby. It’s time for him to retire.”
Another chimed in with, “Geno is mad because he got his ass kicked by a black woman. Wait until he and his ancestors find out Jesus, Adam and Eve are black and the Creator is a female.”
A third person added, “Geno was about to attack a female coach until his staff pushed him away. What a loser.”
Auriemma issued an apology via social media.
“There’s no excuse for how I handled the end of the game vs. South Carolina,” he wrote.
“It’s unlike what I do and what our standard is here at Connecticut. I want to apologize to the staff and the team at South Carolina.”
