ATLANTA — Fellas… if you were a C-student and you’re driving a bus, don’t bother trying to get a date with Eboni K. Williams. That’s because the prepossessing barrister told Iyanla Vanzant Average Joes who work 9 to 5 ain’t good enough, and that includes employees in public transportation. Eboni, host of Revolt TV’s “State of the Culture,” believes proprietorship originates with being an A and B student. Instead of driving the bus, it’s Eboni’s assertion more men should seek the pedagogy necessary to own the damn company. Simply collecting remuneration won’t cut it. “To the 50,000 plus comments posted on social [media], I only saw a handful that even considered the possibility of a bus owner being a more aspirational position and recognizing that I am actually speaking and pouring into the ascension of black men when I said what I said,” Eboni elucidated.
“But… some of y’all were too busy naming and shaming me personally, and black women in general, as undesirable gold diggers and much worse. Now, I suspect that some of y’all are the same men that were bringing home C’s and D’s on your report cards only to be coddled by parents that said, ‘Well, that’s ok. As long as you’re doing your best.’ Well listen, I love and believe in the excellence of black men. So no, my dear, C’s and D’s — or any other form of mediocrity — is not ok.”

If you’re driving a bus you’re LITERALLY making average money, and by comparison to high income positions, working a mediocre job. I don’t understand why black people are so butt-hurt over the word AVERAGE. It exists for a reason. We have a national income average, we have financial averages, sport’s averages, marriage and divorce averages. Its math, people. Being a bus driver requires simply a high school diploma or GED education, there is no critical thinking or strategy needed to drive a bus, there is NO quantitative skills required and absolutely no place for creative outlets. So why would you be so offended by being referred to as “average” when being compared to a lawyer or even a small business owner? And bringing it back to topic: what makes you, the bus driver, think you deserve a BAD ASS SEXY HIGH VALUE WOMAN more than a man who DOES have high level skill, education, accolades and assets?

Just imagine that a month ago, Marques Houston, without even being asked, declared that he won’t date single mothers or women his age. All the guys were out there agreeing with him, saying that he is a high value man and that he is right to have his preference. But here we are now, a black woman says that she won’t date a bus driver as he makes less than her and these same guys call her a gold digger and say her standards are too high, she would die alone, blah, blah, blah. So there is grace for a 40+ year old driver, as he deemed to be a good guy, even though he is just driving a bus (not taking into account what he wasted his youth on) and therefore is worthy of Eboni, an accomplished woman. As a black woman studying engineering, I feel like all this talk of “striving for more and being exceptional ” is just a fancy way of justifying greed. Like, yeah I’m working hard for a degree in a feild that should (hopefully) get me a good salary, but as soon as I GET that salary, why can’t I just be comfortable? Why do we have to expect people to do more? My boyfriend is also in civil engineering, and as hard as school is, it’s unfair for me to expect him to strive for even MORE. If a man can provide for himself, and if we can live comfortably together, why not just stay where we are? It’s not complacency, it’s CONTENT.

As a Combat Veteran, it is very clear to me that she does not understand or appreciate the price of freedom and the privileges she enjoys that comes with it. Ranks E1-E6 are the lowest pay grades in the military, yet these are the same people who have and will continue to pay the ultimate sacrifice; to help maintain those freedoms and privileges. Like everyone else, she’s entitled to want what she wants. That being said, I’m not buying the “I was talking about ownership and Black excellence” line because she could have said that to Iyanla immediately following (or soon after) her initial comment. The thing is, she said earlier that she’s already been through a spectrum of men (undoubtedly including some who could “own the bus” or even a fleet), but none of them were suitable either. At what point does her mindset come into the conversation? For example, suppose the bus driver was happy in his chosen (well-paying) job because once he left it, his mind was free to pursue other interests, such as painting (art), playing a musical instrument, mentoring youths, small plane piloting, competitive Chess, writing, volunteer work, acting in community theater, wine making, managing rental properties, dancing, pickle ball, gardening, car restoration, acting as a museum docent, calligraphy, traveling, etc. Suppose he’s a well-rounded individual who’s simply chosen to drive a bus; should a woman seeking a suitable mate not even allow for that possibility? The wrong mindset will keep you exactly where you are. And the only thing moving forward will be time.
Let’s be clear: Eboni ain’t gotta want a bus driver simply cuz her mom was one. Same time, Eboni ain’t got a bus driver, the mechanic or anything else. She is proof positive that a little bit of cute, a law degree, and internet celebrity doesn’t put her in the orbit of the kind of man she thinks she deserves.
