Barstool owner suing NFL, claiming games are fixed

Barstool honco suing the NFL.

Blog King, Mass Appeal

NEW YORK — Uh-oh! Ladies & Gentlemen, we have our first sports gambling scandal. We knew this would transpire when rapacious franchise owners hopped in bed with Vegas oddsmakers. A viral Twitter video shows Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy announcing his class-action lawsuit against the NFL and Cincinnati Bengals for allegedly swindling gamblers out of millions by predetermining the outcome of games. Dave made the audacious claim after learning Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, who wasn’t on the injury report, wore a wrist wrap on the team bus prior to facing the Baltimore Ravens on Amazon Prime’s “Thursday Night Football.” Now he’s done for the season. Had gamblers known Burrow was injured, they wouldn’t have placed bets on the Bengals. Bettors nationwide are understandably pissed.

Dave is litigating on their behalf.

“Hi there. My name is Dave Portnoy,” he said in the clip.

“My father is an attorney [Michael J Portnoy]. Have you lost money betting on the NFL? Did you bet on the Bengals… against the Ravens thinking Joe Burrow was healthy? Only to find out after the fact that he had a brace on his hand coming out of the bus and was not listed on the injury report? That is unfair. You’re the victim.”

“Here at Portnoy [and my dad, Michael J. Portnoy] Law Firm, we protect grieved gamblers from these atrocities from Roger Goodell and the Cincinnati Bengals,” Dave continued. “I will be filing a class action lawsuit on behalf of all grieved gamblers. So join me as we fight for the people for every man to get rightfully what is ours. The injury report exists for a reason. If you’re not on the injury report, that means you’re healthy. If you get off the bus wearing a brace around your hand, that means unhealthy.

“We expect when we put our hard-earned money to work we get a fair value, fair shot. Gambling is legal in this country. Who will protect the gamblers? I will, through my dad [Michael J. Portnoy, Attorney at Law] class-action lawsuit. Join me, protecting you.”

Dave ain’t the only one crying foul.

Super Bowl champion head coach Tony Dungy accused referees of scripting the game by making “phantom calls” to ensure a Ravens victory. Baltimore beat Cincinnati 34-20. “If not for the unfortunate injuries to Mark Andrews & Joe Burrow last night everyone would be talking about the officiating,” Tony tweeted. “Missing a foul is one thing —you can’t see everything that happens,” he wrote. “But calling things that aren’t there??? Phantom calls were a problem both ways!”

Bengals safety Jordan Battle echoed a homogeneous sentiment.

“We can’t play the refs,” he vented after the game.

It should be noted, the NFL is licensed as a sports entertainment entity instead of just sports.

That means, legally, they can predetermine the outcomes of contests (à la the WWE).

That said, do you think NFL games are fixed?

Are gamblers being sodomized?

Watch Dave put the league on blast.

  1. I’m a little suspicious. Two quarterbacks (Joe Burrow & Deshaun Watson) got injured and is out for the rest of the season. Both injuries were sustained while playing against Baltimore. It’s just a theory, but I can’t help but wonder if it was done intentionally so Baltimore could stay on top in the AFC north.

  2. That’s garbage, KC was favor by 7.5 points over the Jets, and won the game 23-20, they could have ran in for a TD but took a knee at the 1, KC players said, they wanted the win, they didn`t care about the point spread. So this is BS this guy is reporting.

  3. The NFL sucks this year anyway. So many just average teams and the amount of really good quarterbacks are dwindling. We were spoiled with the mass of talent prior. Maybe the same thing will happen to the NFL as the NBA. Nobody watches the NBA anymore. Its a woke leftist agenda filled heap of 3 pointers and ticky tack fouls.

  4. Actually… the NFL will probably be punishing the Bengals if he should have been listed on the injury report.. they are VERY picky about that. Sadly though, many leagues don’t even allow fans to hear injury reports (Hell, MLB teams rarely report such unless they will be out) or the reports are so vague the value of them is nil… (NHL) meaning.. his threat probably has less than even chances of being bounced.. that said, I expect Goodell to probably fine the H out of the bengals for him not being listed because the NFL is one of the few that is picky about the injury reports.

  5. The NFL being rigged, is this supposed to be something new? Not.
And the same can be said for other sports as well.

  6. Something big is going to come out with sports and teams and players shaving points.

  7. Burrow seemed to be throwing decent before the injury so I think that is being overblown here. The thing that jumped out at me were the consecutive, CONSECUTIVE baloney pass interference calls the refs called against the Bengals while the game was actually playing along in their favor and inevitably practically gave the Ravens a free touchdown. That was either right before or right after Burrows injury, I can’t exactly remember but between Burrows injury and the free touchdown the refs gave the Ravens, all that shifted the game HEAVILY to Ravens. Seemed very rigged to me, not a fan of either team so no bias here. Seemed super rigged.

  8. The way the NFL treated St. Louis when they orchestrated the move of the Rams to LA was the last straw for me. Patriots were caught taping the Rams practices before the Super Bowl too.

  9. Everyone should be going after Roger Goodell before we have to pay just to say NFL. He is a FREAKING crook. Every game used to be free before Goodell came along.

  10. Fuck ya it’s rigged big time how you think Brady got his Superbowl rings???? so rigged big time big time why pick on Joe burrow he’s hurt out for the season why pick on him?????

  11. Corruption is so obvious. The calls are pure shit, real football fans know game. Yea entertainment not sport

  12. Why would anybody bet on a fixed sport like the nfl or even the nba?

  13. OMG.. that lawyer sounds like one of those Really late night infomercials. He is an ambulance chaser lawyer.. Pretty slimy if you ask me.

  14. The NFL isn’t about the Game, it’s about the $$$$$ Sports is as Corrupt as GOVT!!! 💯

  15. I have never thought this about the league but I started feeling that the NFL was rigged after the Chiefs vs Jets game early in the season.

  16. If you do not believe that the NFL is rigged you need to get your head outta your arse.

  17. WTF 🤣🤣🤣🤣there’s always a KAREN crying about something 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  18. Not having that pass interference challenge cost the saints a 2nd superbowl, nfc championship between rams and saints!!! If they had made the EXTREMELY OBVIOUS PI call, saints would have 2 SB RINGS!!!

  19. Since the Bengals are the issue here. Why don’t they look at the Rams Bengals Superbowl? Refs controlled that game. Refs controlled the AFC championship game last year as well as the Superbowl last year. All Refs have to do is get point spreads and throw a few flags to control the scores….. To me that’s what should be in any lawsuit. I read that a man bet 5 million dollars on the Bengal’s to win the Superbowl. I bet he would love to get in on what I’m talking about… They should not allow gambling in professional sports. To many variables….. Too many thieves.

  20. As a Broncos fan I became convinced the NFL is rigged when.Payton Manning, who couldn’t throw 20 yards, won the Super Bowl. Referees control the game, the winner is decided in advance

  21. Anyone remember the movie, The Last Boy Scout? Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans. The topic of this movie is in the news over current NFL events – the injury report of NFL teams and the Vegas gambling lines.

  22. The NFL is needs to get rid of Goodell, he has done nothing but screw the NFL for to long .

  23. LMAO, sure. Someone has to play devils advocate in this mess of a comment section. First you have to prove Burrow was DIAGNOSED with an injury that affected his ability to play/practice, not just soreness(he was looking pretty damn good before he left, 11-17 100 yds and a TD, so good luck with that). They aren’t required to list soreness on an injury report, or list any injuries beyond what will affect the players ability to play/practice. Then, you have to prove that not just you, but every member of the class didn’t bet on the Bengals weeks 1 thru 4 when burrow WAS on the injury report, (since the basis of your ‘damages’ is you wouldn’t have bet on the Bengals if you knew he had an injury, even if that injury was listed as probable to play) or any game where the quarterback was listed as questionable/probable honestly. Then you need some form of credible hard evidence that whatever mystery injury “they didn’t report” was DIRECTLY connected to the one that knocked him out of the game, because you all realize he didn’t play the first quarter with a torn ligament right? You can’t just say “Of course it was” and have a judge even agree to admit it as evidence let alone use it as a basis for a judgement. Oh and you have to do all this while facing off against the lawyers of a billion dollar organization.

Simple truth is, sportsbooks don’t have to fix games to get your money, 95% of you give it to them willingly because you THINK you know football better than everyone else. And then, instead of just admitting you were wrong, NO, there is a global conspiracy to steal your $5 parlay. Ya’ll lost your bets fair and square, deal with it. But I’m sure you are all correct. Goodell personally looks to see if you specifically placed a $20 teaser bet and just wants YOUR money. They don’t even care if most of the money is put on the other team, they just want YOUR money. That’s the only possible reason your bet failed. Can’t have been you just being wrong. Sportsbooks are clearly willing to risk the multiple BILLIONS they bring in, just on the fees alone, simply so a few of you lose your bets. Some of you guys sound like the people claiming the MGM casino cheated them because they lost 9 grand on roulette.

directly from the injury report policy “…..must be reported immediately if the injury or event could affect a player’s ability to play in that week’s game….” see the part about IF the injury could affect his ability to play in that week’s game. He played, he looked great, he got hurt.

  24. Mental midgets who gamble thinking they’re entitled to a “fair bet”…how are you that thick, son?

  25. They will lose the lawsuit. The NFL an official stance of not supporting gambling. Calvin Ridley was suspended for an entire season betting on NFL games that he didn’t even play in.

  26. lot of talk about the referees and gambling. Thursday nights game there was a 3rd Down and 10 and the Ravens threw the ball, pass interference was called and replay showed it was a totally outrageously bad call. Other than that, the rest of everyone’s comments are speculation and just plain trolling, none of us have any proof or idea any real crimes are committed, at least not yet. I think they need to go back to only gambling is out of Las Vegas, all this gambling is going to ruin young people, as if they aren’t being ruined enough already by so much brainwashing and the college professors bigotry and bias.

  27. Watch the end of Min vrs. KC 4 minutes 4th down 1st Cousins hit in the head no call, 2nd obvious defensive holding/ pass interference flag picked up, 3rd DB takes helmet off on field (before the ref bailed him out) ref tells him to put lid back on no flag? NFL has to have KC win, becoming absurd last 2 season.

  28. Unfortunately, there is no case to be made against the NFL. The NFL is a self-proclaimed “Entertainment” entity. There is no law prohibiting the NFL from rigging its own games. The NFL is untouchable in this case, and I absolutely assure you, that is true. Since the argument is that the integrity of gambling is compromised by it, the only action that can be taken is against the sportsbooks that took wagers on the game, but they can plead ignorance. This will amount to exactly JACK SQUAT!

  29. Bengals fans weren’t angry when they were scripted to make the super bowl 2 years ago

  30. I lost 35 dollars on that game. And that was my freaking gas money!! ⛽️

  31. I can’t watch a “live” NFL game anymore. Way, way, way too many commercials (someone has to pay Kyler Murray and DeShaun Watson) and most of all, the ridiculous celebrations – they are pathetic. The dancing, the twerking, the entire defense running down to the end zone and doing some stupid antic. And it is for EVERY play – they stop an offense from gaining a first down, the guy that made the tackle or broke up the pass, acts like he just cured cancer. I watched a 1975 game on YouTube a few days ago…, Golden Richards caught a TD, he flipped the ball to the ref, shook a teammates hand, and trotted off the field. There is a disgusting and sickening culture in the NFL today, and it is ridiculous. Oh, and the ridiculous nose wiping to indicate a “first down”…, yeah, we know a first down was made. It is easier to just pull up the NFL web site and watch the highlight of a game. It covers all the scores – no commercials, and no ridiculous celebrations.

  32. This is one of the dumbest things ive ever heard..stay away from betting or…win/lose with grace..if its rigged..and you feel that way do not bet..and the NFL and NBA and other sports..stop being sponsored by all these online betting places..get sponsorships elsewhere..but if you are rigged by all means stay in bed with them.

  33. Gamblers the victim???? 😂😂😂😂😂
Portnoy it is a piece of sh*t 💩

  34. The NFL is huge but sports betting is HUGER!

Who controls who!? NFL like WWE is for entertainment!!!

It’s not real folks. Save your money people!!

  35. I took the Bengals on Fanduel and lost a little coin $50 bucks and called Fanduel asking for a credit from this fraud. Not sure if anything will come from it but doesn’t hurt to ask

  36. Gambling might be legal but it’s not wise money policy. Nobody forces you to lay your money down. Quit crying Dave, you lost your own money. Duh

  37. The nfl needs to get the refs in check. They are as dirty as the day is long! Some of it is too blatant to be ignored, I’m certain it is done on behalf of New York mobsters and Las Vegas. Let’s get our great sport back to where it was before all the corruption! IMO

  38. Legalized gambling is the worst thing to ever happen to sports along with NIL college money
