CLEVELAND — “🎵Fight the power! We’ve got to fight the powers that be!🎵” Administrators at Delta State University are under fire 🔥 after one of their black students, 21-year-old Demartravion “Trey” Reed, was found dead hanging from a tree 🌴 on campus. The fatality transpired on September 15, 2025 in Cleveland, Mississippi. Trey’s corpse was discovered in a noose around 7 a.m. by a faculty member near the pickleball courts. The Cleveland Police Department ruled his death a suicide. The Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy and came to the same determination. Ditto for the Bolivar County Coroner’s Office, who found “no evidence of foul play.” Trey’s quietus has rehashed painful memories of the racist brutality that transpired during Mississippi’s Jim Crow-era. Keep in mind, Delta State is located roughly 50 miles from the Tallahatchie River where, in 1955, police found the mangled cadaver of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black male, who was kidnapped and tortured by two rednecks after being accused of catcalling a white woman (Carolyn Bryant) outside a grocery store.

Carolyn, by the way, admitted she was mendacious about Emmett’s deportment in a 2008 interview with historian Timothy Tyson.

Delta State officials have received death threats.

Classes were subsequently canceled.

And, damage control is underway.

“I want to begin by acknowledging that the manner how Trey was discovered has stirred many emotions in this community and many emotions around the state and the nation,” Delta State President Dan Ennis said at his news conference. “In that regard, we have been very grateful that we have had increased law enforcement presence on this campus and, unfortunately, that’s because this campus has received threats, and my message to that regard would be, we have students here.

“They came here to get an education,” Ennis continued.

And folks who threaten the institution are hurting students, and we don’t want that. We are supposed to be a place where students come to feel safe and to learn. That’s our mission, and that’s what we’ll continue to do.”

Cleveland Police Chief Travis Tribble — who’s a negro — also issued a statement, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers remain with Reed’s family and friends during this very difficult time.”

Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump has been retained by Trey’s family, and they’re using Colin Kaepernick’s “Know Your Rights Camp Autopsy Initiative” to cover the cost of another necropsy.

It’s their assertion a lynching took place.

There’s also scuttlebutt of a white student killing Trey.

The police department said there’s video footage of the incident, but there’s no timetable for a release.

  10. I’m gonna make some valid points. Please just read this. Anybody knows anything about suicide knows that it’s a private act. So why would somebody hang themselves in a public place ? Two, Did they find anything he could have stood on to get up on aiding him to put the noose around his neck? Because when you hang yourself, that means you are hung from the neck until dead. And that means that your feet have to have no contact with the ground. So there had to be something for him to stand on thirdly, why would he be hung in such a public place? That makes no sense.

  39. This is surely the most *compelling* suicide Ive ever heard of. Hanging from a tree? In Mississippi? Who even *does* that? Seems like a convenient plot twist for some folks desperate for a racial narrative, you know, typical Tuesday. And the speed of the initial ruling? Record efficiency, probably funded by Colin Kaepernicks initiative, because nothing says serious investigation like free healthcare for autopsies.   49. In my opinion, they rushed to that decision too fast. I don’t think they’re telling the whole story. I think they’re trying to hide stuff and that’s generally what the police and these investigators will do because they don’t wanna make themselves look bad so hopefully with the families investigation, we can get to a better answer. If he hung himself himself there should be some type of something on his neck, bruising or something nine times out of 10 when you try to take your life, you change your mind at the last minute and you struggle with yourself. Try yourself back generally I’m not speaking for everybody. If you do research on it you’ll find that that generally happens sometimes and this is just my opinion.
