When the slaves were brought here, they had to be trained to do everything. They had no written language. They were trained to do their skills. Yes, there were a lot of them that picked it up quickly, and were actual tradespeople, artisans, and successful business people when allowed to do so. Fact, the greatest rise of Black business and accomplishments happened right after the uncivil war, with lots of repressive rules, zoning, and segregation. I’m reading a book now about the Dakotas in the mid and late 19th century, and despite their low numbers, they were making big strides in places like Yankton. Maybe if segregation would have been continued, they would be better off.
