RICHMOND, Va. — Here’s a pomp and circumstance story fo’ yo’ azz. Amari Pollard, 19, was thrown in the slammer after he murdered 18-year-old Shawn Jackson during their high school graduation. Shawn’s stepfather, 36-year-old Renzo Smith, was also blown to smithereens. The double homicide transpired on June 6, 2023 in Monroe Park — outside the Altria Theater in Richmond, Virginia. Shortly after Huguenot High School’s commencement ceremony, Amari went to his car and got a gun. Then he chased Shawn around the park before opening fire — striking him twice in the back. Hundreds of graduates and attendees ran in panic. When Renzo stepped in to intervene, Amari shot him multiple times. Five other people were also shot. But, fortunately, they survived. Amari was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and unlawful use of a firearm.
At first, Amari claimed self-defense. But prosecutor Colette McEachin said, “Bullsh*t!” So he copped a plea and Judge Reilly Marchant sentenced him to a measly 25 years in the penitentiary. Shawn’s mother, Tameeka Jackson-Smith, witnessed the shooting from inside her car. The widow believes Amari’s comeuppance brought her family justice. But she wanted a longer sentence.
“I was at peace to accept the plea deal,” Tameeka said.
I felt like God put it on my heart to just go ahead and just release – release the anger. He’s going to have a life when he gets out. My son ain’t going to have nothing. My son can’t have kids. He could have kids. My son won’t be able to get married. He’s going to be able to get married.”
Richmond police officials said Shawn and Amari, who were once best friends, had conflicts in the past.
But they’re still investigating the nature of their beef.
Scuttlebutt has it Amari was jealous of Shawn’s talent as a gangsta rapper.
“What made you take my son’s life?” Tameeka bemoaned.
“You made it to the car. You could’ve left. What made you come back and take my son’s life? I don’t get that part. Why my son?”
Donning a cap, tassel and gown, Shawn had just got his diploma when Amari decided to f*ck up the moment.

I think it’s more to the story other than a jealous best friend. When they showed a picture of the victim they had to blur his hands cause he was throwing up a gang sign which look like C for Crip. You mean to tell me of all pictures that’s the best picture they could find of him was him throwing up a gang sign. That makes me believe though he succeeded in getting his diploma he was also involved in gang activity and you’ll be surprised that a gang will use the person closes to you to take you out and if you don’t comply they’ll get you or your family. It’s sad all together and senseless. RIP to the father and son.
